(Endorsement) Personal Effects: Dark Art
NOTE FROM STEVE: This is not this week’s Escape Pod story. This is me talking about something I like. Feel free to skip this post if it isn’t fun for you.
There are a number of good writers now breaking into the big leagues through podcasting. My friend J.C. Hutchins is one of them. I loved his 7th Son trilogy, and I jumped at the chance when he asked me to read an advance copy of his horror novel Personal Effects: Dark Art
Here’s my initial reaction (Hutch liked it enough that he added the background music and bumper titling and such):

I read the book in PDF form. And then I pre-ordered it on Amazon, because it’s just that good. (Also because the little goodies that come with the physical copy sound like fun.) This is an unusual horror novel: it brings in a lot of conventional settings and tropes, but the characters break from formula in some surprising ways. And it’s a smart horror novel. Silliness in hats aside, I highly recommend it.

While I don’t mind you telling us about things you like, was including the video in the feed necessary? I don’t typically expect (or want) 80 meg files just appearing. Long Podcasts usually only add up to 30, and that gives me 60x the enjoyment. I don’t want to sound like a killjoy, could we just have an announcement in the feed next time?
I hate to bitch as well…but without the mp3 feed I cannot even listen to it….just a note!

Wow is that what Steve really looks like? It’s always interesting seeing what radio/podcast people look like. I know the voice so well, but the face is unfamiliar, which is back-to-front how one’s brain usually works.
I agree with Maxiewawa, above. It’s great to have a face to put to the voice I hear every week.
Question: do you typically wear the hat (sweet hat!) when reading for the podcast?
Request: please post more videos (um, outside the feed I guess) of the other voice-actors who have appeared in Escape Pod. Seeing a face to go with the voice was a treat!
