First appeared in Asimov’s Feb 2008

Imagine a cross between Byzantium and a termite mound. Imagine a jeweled mountain, slender as an icicle, rising out of the steam jungles and disappearing into the dazzling pearl-grey skies of Gehenna. Imagine that Gaudí—he of the Segrada Familia and other biomorphic architectural whimsies—had been commissioned by a nightmare race of giant black millipedes to recreate Barcelona at the height of its glory, along with touches of the Forbidden City in the eighteenth century and Tokyo in the twenty-second, all within a single miles-high structure. Hold every bit of that in your mind at once, multiply by a thousand, and you’ve got only the faintest ghost of a notion of the splendor that was Babel.

Now imagine being inside Babel when it fell.

Rated PG. Contains the destruction of cities, a lack of trust, and sentient suits.

Summers, I sleep on rooftops. Under smokestacks, beside stairs, in the sudden green of precarious gardens.

I’ve already responded to the people who e-mailed to express an interest, but just to make it public: I’m in London, and we’ll be having an informal pub meetup on Sunday, November 25 at 1 PM at The George on 77 Borough High Street. Not sure yet if we’ll be inside or outside; I’ll be wearing a purple shirt, and if you don’t see me, just look for the crowd of people who look like science fiction fans. If you can make it, we look forward to seeing you there!

I know this is late notice; sorry about that. I’m speaking this weekend at the Podcast Expo in Ontario, California, and Cunning Minx and I have put plans together for a joint brunch meetup. If you’re in the area, I’d love to see you there.

The brunch will be SUNDAY, SEPT. 30 AT 11 AM at Marie Callender’s in Ontario, CA:

MARIE CALLENDER’S
2149 E. Convention Way
Ontario, CA 91764

Here’s a Mapquest link for those of you who can use it.

Feel free to spread the word — but if you’re coming, please drop me an e-mail at sfeley@gmail.com so we know how big a table to get. Thanks very much.

This’ll be Fun.

Just a quick note for those of you attending Dragon*Con 2007 — here are the places you’ll be able to find Steve during the weekend:

  • Steve will be producing the Daily Dragon Podcast every day of the con. Listen in for convention news, interviews, and music!
  • The panel Fancasting, 2:30 PM Friday in the Jackson/Carter room in the Hilton.
  • The 2nd Annual Parsec Awards, 7 PM Saturday in the Hyatt Regency V ballroom. Escape Pod and Pseudopod are both nominated for excellence in short fiction.
  • The Escape Pod Listener Meet-Up, 1 PM Sunday at the Gordon Biersch Brewpub at 848 Peachtree Street. Everyone is welcome!
  • The panel Podcasting Into the Future, 10 AM Monday in the Jackson/Carter room in the Hilton.

And of course you might just see me around the convention any other time. If you’re there, I hope to see you — and I hope you have a great time!

I’m usually not much for self-promotion (to a fault, I’ve been told) but if anyone here really wants to hear more about how the sausage is made, I did a couple of interviews recently that were released this week:

  • Rusty Tanton of the Georgia Podcast Network spoke with me for about ten minutes about Escape Pod at the SoCon 2007 unconference last week:
    Listen here.
  • Bazooka Joe of the Small World Podcast did a much longer and more detailed interview that covered Escape Pod in depth and some of my other opinions on science fiction as a whole:

Hi all,

I announced this in the intro to last week’s episode, but got distracted and didn’t put it into written form here. Until now.

With the aid of an anonymous donor, Escape Pod is presenting a contest for the best SF story of 300 words or less. There are no restrictions on theme, plot, or structure. The goal is simply to present a strong idea-based story in the minimum space possible. (more…)

PodDisc.com is live!

As promised in the past couple of episodes, our online storefront for selling podcast archive CDs is (finally!) up and running at PodDisc.com. This is your chance to get all of your holiday shopping done in one place — provided everyone you know wants over 45 hours of science fiction short stories on CD.

What do the discs look like? I’m glad you asked. They look like this:

Escape Pod Collection 3

Beautiful, isn’t it? And for a very slight fee, you can have your own personal message put on the CD. You can buy each disc for $10 or a bundle of all three collections for $25. Shipping is a cheap flat rate in the U.S. (and tolerable everywhere else), and satisfaction is guaranteed.

Right now only Escape Pod CDs are available, but once the business model proves viable I plan to open this up to producing archive discs for other podcasters. If that’s a service you’d be interested in, drop me a line and I’ll give you more details.

And remember: If you’ve donated $20 or more to Escape Pod this year, or if you’re a subscriber, don’t buy yet! I’ll be sending details to you in e-mail on how you can get this stuff for free.

…Right after I get some sleep.

Welcome!
